The Trail of History in Grace

Walk through the halls at Grace and learn a lot about its past!

Start at the beginning with the ministerial gallery in the main hall of the office building. It begins with the picture of Fletcher Smith in 1868.

Confirmation classes are held periodically. Methodist history and liturgy are taught. Youth are given the opportunity to travel to Lake Junaluska to visit the museum and attend retreats.

In the sacristy of the sanctuary is a display case of items that were saved from the fire of 1945. Old bulletins, communion trays, 100th anniversary commemorative plate(1968), pictures and offering plate were in excellent shape. On the top shelf is a ledger of attendance and finances. A 1948 Duke Power bill and Mrs. Vesta McFall's Bible join a metal money box on the bottom shelf. The box is dated 10-9-1911, made by F.E. Pickens.

Also in the sacristy these retired paraments are framed in memory of Mr.and Mrs. Ernest Garrett. Edith Garrett made them by hand and they were used from 1948-1998. She taught Sunday School for many years and was very active in children's programs. Mrs. Garrett was a skilled seamstress and made all of George and Edwina's school and church clothes. Ernest sang in the choir and was on the building committee during the construction of the new building in 1948. The Garrett family donated these.

These plaques honors those who became Eagle Scouts that are church members. Grace has sponsored Troop 51 and Pack 3051 for many years. Jack Gantt, one of our former members, served as scoutmaster for Troop 51 for 37 years. During his tenure 64 scouts received their Eagle rank, 22 of them Methodist. At this time 35 Grace names are on the plaques.

Take a look in the library at our collection of scrapbooks of events and activities during the 80s and 90s.

Many Sunday School classes and UMW circles are named after former Grace pastors, or their wives. Sunday School classes are named in memory or honor of Hawley Lynn, Joel Cannon, Morris Thompson and Lee Cothran.  UMW circles have been in memory or honor of Opal Cannon, Frances Majors, Esther Mills or Harriet Mays.

The Bells of Grace began their ministry in 1986., under the direction of Mrs. Betty J. Ashley. They began taking missions trips in 1987 and created scrapbooks for these travels. These are found in the church library.
